Alphonso has been a professional truck driver for 21 years – 21 safe and injury-free
years. He is a pick up and delivery driver at the Roadway service center in Montgomery,
AL. Last year was one of the best in his career – he earned Grand Champion honors
at the 2007 National Truck Driving Championships, or as the industry refers to it,
The Superbowl of Safety. Alphonso is the first grand champion in Roadway’s history.
When GetTrucking.com asked Alphonso how he chose his career in trucking, he told us that his father was a professional truck driver and he always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Alphonso is the second of six brothers and sisters, with two of his brothers also driving trucks professionally in Alabama.
Alphonso drove over-the-road for two years before becoming a P&D driver. He told us his favorite part of his job is meeting and talking with new people everyday. As a P&D driver, his route changes each time he leaves the terminal.
When GetTrucking.com asked Alphonso how he has become so successful, Alphonso said, “I just keep trying to do my best, every day.” Roadway presented Alphonso with a dedicated, personalized Volvo tractor at a celebration of his championship last October. You may have already seen Alphonso driving down the road!
As for being named 2007 Grand Champion, Alphonso said, “I just keep trying to do my best. And being rewarded for doing my best? It’s overwhelming but it feels great. I thought I was already at the top when I won first place in 4-axle. Now I’m on top of the world.” Alphonso, his father and brothers, used to joke with each other about who was the best professional driver in the family. Now Alphonso has a giant trophy to prove he’s the best driver, not only in his family, but in the entire country.
Alphonso, who has lived his life dedicated to safety and professionalism, credits his co-workers and family for his success. He said he “believes Roadway has the best drivers in the industry,” and told us his wife Regina is “everything to me.” Alphonso and Regina have two children, a 22-year old daughter LeFerrica and a 17-year old son Alphonso, Jr.
